Cybersecurity in Canada

National Cyber Security Strategy:

Technology is an essential part of our lives which has become increasingly linked to services like our hospitals, transit systems, energy suppliers, and telecommunications systems. Along with this connectedness, however, comes cyber threats which are creating significant impacts on our national and economic security.

The Government of Canada, in February 2025, created a new National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS), which provides a new approach to how they will keep people in Canada and Canadian businesses and services safe in a rapidly evolving digital world. Through this Strategy and its associated future action plans, the Government of Canada hopes to protect Canada’s national security and economy, deter cyber threat actors, and promote international rules-based behavior in cyberspace.

Quick Facts:

  • According to the National Cyber Threat Assessment 2025-2026, malicious cyber threat actors present a persistent threat to Canada’s economic prosperity and national security

  • Ransomware is almost certainly the most disruptive form of cybercrime facing Canada because it is pervasive and can have a serious impact on an organization’s ability to function

  • Cybercrime can disrupt the flow of essential goods and services due to its impacts on organizations in an industrial supply chain.
  • Cybercrime has evolved from online theft and credit card fraud to more elaborate ways of extorting victims
  • Canada ranks fairly well in terms of cybersecurity. In a comparison by Comparitech that included 75 countries and over a dozen factors, Canada’s score placed the country 13th. The factors included how prepared the country is to face cyber attacks and the frequency of cyber attacks.
