Scholarly Communication in Canada

This section provides overall information on the current state of scholarly communications in Canada. It discusses how researchers, editors, publishers, government policy makers, librarians and consumers of scholarly information are all involved in the various stages and aspects of the system in which scholarly communication operates.

Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications (Government of Canada)
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) (“the Agencies”) are federal granting agencies that promote and support research, research training and innovation within Canada. As publicly funded organizations, the Agencies have an interest in promoting the availability of findings that result from the research they fund to the widest possible audience and at the earliest possible opportunity. Societal advancement is made possible through widespread and barrier-free access to cutting-edge research enabling researchers, scholars, clinicians, policymakers, private sector and not-for-profit organizations and the public to use and build on this knowledge.
The Transition of Scholarly Communications in Canada (2002)
This report, by Kathleen Shearer and Bill Birdsall, presents an analysis of the current situation and outlines a conceptual framework for the scholarly communication process, the actors within it, the drivers transforming it, and the issues arising out of that transformation. These issues have an affect on all Canadian researchers in every discipline and make the case for further research into scholarly communication in Canada.
Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)
CARL provides leadership on behalf of Canada’s research libraries and enhances capacity to advance research and higher education. It promotes effective and sustainable knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation, and public policy that enable broad access to scholarly information.
CARL has great information on the open access movement, sustainable publishing, information for authors and trends and innovations in research dissemination.
Scholarly Communication at Canadian Research Libraries: Conversations with Librarians (Journal of Librarianship & Scholarly Communication, 2014)
The objectives of this study were to investigate: the scope of scholarly communication activities within Canadian research libraries; the organizational structures in place to support them; and the roles of librarians who participate in them. Key challenges to its advancement and how librarians envision its future were also investigated.
The State of Research Integrity and Misconduct Policies in Canada (HAL, 2009)
This report, for the Canadian Research Integrity Committee, was prepared by a team of HAL consultants led by Tijs Creutzberg, PhD.
The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the organizations and policies that define how allegations of research misconduct are addressed in Canada and in other
selected countries. The study is to inform a discussion to be led by the Canadian Research
Integrity Committee about how best to strengthen Canada’s research integrity system.
