The following books, websites and article provide great information and example of sustainability for interior design and architecture.

The 7 Principles of Universal Design were developed in 1997 by a group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers, led by the late Ronald Mace in the North Carolina State University (NCSU). The purpose of the Principles is to provide guidance and direction on the design of environments, products and communications.

According to the Center for Universal Design in NCSU, the 7 Principles of Universal Design are as follows:

  • Equitable Use
  • Flexibility in Use
  • Simple and Intuitive Use
  • Perceptible Information
  • Tolerance for Error
  • Low Physical Effort
  • Size and Space for Approach and Use

Please also consider the Institute for Human Centred Design when thinking about universal design.
