Writing for Digital Content

Effective writing skills are essential for content creation and strategy.  Digital media and content are pervasive and knowing how to write well within this context is vital to be successful in content creation industries and fields.  Here are some best practices for digital writing from Cara Miller's excellent OER, Writing for Digital Media:

  • Put the main idea of the text in your title
  • Use headings and subheadings
  • Put the most important information near the beginning
  • Keep the language and sentence structure simple
  • Use precise language
  • Use hyperlinks
  • Repeat keywords
  • Condense information
  • Organize information into chunks
  • Use bullets
  • Write in an active voice
  • Avoid language that is offensive or inappropriate

Intellectual Property & Copyright:

According to Cara Miller, the digital content creation landscape is characterized by the influence of many others, accessible web content and the ability to create remixes - mashups, edits, blends and megamixes which result in creative works and expression.  However, it is very relevant to know that copyright law is still an important concept for the intellectual property of published works to protect artistic integrity and the financial compensation of the author or creator.

Copyright's purpose is to promote the development of new ideas by providing control and financial incentive for people to invest their time in their creative works.
