Standards & Codes

Codes and standards impact firefighting in Canada greatly.  The most important code for firefighting is the National Fire Code of Canada, 2020 by the National Research Council of Canada. New changes to the code are implemented approximately every five years to ensure safety standards are updated with modern technology

Contributors:

  • The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) is another key collaborator to the firefighting profession in Canada since some of their codes and standards apply in Canada. Canadian fire and building codes reference nearly 90 NFPA codes and standards
  • The Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners also actively participate in developing codes and standards relating to fire safety.
  • The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC), an independent committee of volunteers established by the NRC, provides direction and oversight of code development. NRC hosts the system and is involved throughout, from managing funding to supporting committee work with the latest technical information and expertise.

Codes are either adopted outright by jurisdictions or amended or supplemented to suit regional needs and then published as territorial or provincial codes. Enforcement is also the responsibility of the provincial or territorial Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Please check out some of the codes below which influence firefighting.  These codes, and other standards, are available from the library's database, CSA OnDemand. If you'd like to know more about standards and codes, please review the library's, Standards and Codes research guide which provides an overview of how they work in Canada.
