Libraries and OER

Libraries, as learning communities, can play a significant role in promoting, locating, organizing and critically evaluating relevant OER for faculty, staff and students. They can:

  • Guide faculty in identifying and searching key OER repositories such as BCCampus’ Open Textbook Collection, eCampus’ Open Library, the OER Commons and the Open Textbook Library for relevant OER.
  • Provide faculty assistance in evaluating credible and relevant OER for classroom learning and instruction based on subject matter expertise.
  • Create OER research guides where OER can be curated and easily accessed for students and faculty.
  • Guide students in locating supplementary OER when they are challenged by costly textbooks.
  • Promote and support staff and faculty in the use and benefits of OER for teaching, learning and research.
  • Liaise between faculty and students to provide OER recommendations for students, staff and faculty.
  • Offer resources to faculty on self-publishing, OER and accessibility toolkits, and learning portals.
