Background Information

Doing some background reading about your topic or subject before your start an instructor's assignment can help your work go faster and more smoothly.  A few suggestions to guide your background research process.

1. Read the textbook chapters that your instructor has assigned.  These will provide you with some history, context and vocabulary that you need to know to effectively use other sources.

2.  Use subject specific reference sources (dictionary, encyclopedia, handbook) to understand key terms, definitions and topics in your field.  Some examples are below. These items can not leave the library.

3. Use library books, that have been selected by instructors and librarians, to see how the topic has been deconstructed and to provide you with important background.
